  • CANINE SUNSHINE

Let me introduce you to my little floppy mop ray of canine sunshine, Muffin. She is the last in a long line of rejects that have found a safe haven under our roof. (I am a real softie for the underdog, underprivileged, and mistreated ~ be it mankind or beast.) She is a Shih Tzu/Terrier mix. Our vet says it is anybody's guess which of the toy terriers it might be - maybe Miniature Schnauzer or Yorkie....

Her story began about a year-and-a- half ago. It was the autumn rainy season. (We have thunderstorms here in central Arkansas pretty much every spring and fall, and that year was no exception.) It was a stormy night with lightning cracking, and thunder booming ~ a real "toad strangler," hubby would say, when my daughter found her standing bewildered in the middle of the state highway near our house, drenched to the skin and trembling like a leaf. She loves most anything furry with four legs too, so she stopped her car, and rescued her from certain death. I bathed her and picked the ticks off of her, and she slept upstairs with Em that night.

Over the next few days, she stole our hearts. She seemed to be afraid of almost every thing ~ loud noises, quick movements, brooms, feet, our cat, men and doorways. She would freeze in the doorway of any room inside, or out. It was as if she wasn't sure what to do. She ate very little. I finally got her to eat from my hand a bit at a time. After 3 days we were all in love with this little hobo dog, and she was becoming part of  the family. (During this time no one came through our neighborhood looking for a lost pet.)

The following Friday I was weeding my flower garden and she was outdoors with me, when a man came walking up our street. When he saw her he whistled for her. She 'cowed down'  and slowly walked his direction. I heard him swear at her under his breath. When I asked, he told me she was his wife's blankety-blank dog, and that she had been missing for two weeks. So he scooped her up and she disappeared our of our lives. I was shocked and angered to see him take her just across the street and down a few doors! When Em got home that evening from work I told her what had happened. We both cried.

Several times over the next few weeks she returned as I was weeding the back flower bed wiggling, and squirming, and licking me in the face. Each time I took her home with a heavy heart. Finally I worked up the courage to ask them if they would consider letting us have her. I even offered to pay for her. The hubby was more than willing, but the wife was not. I told them if they ever changed their minds, or couldn't take care of her to please let me know. About six months later, the first Tuesday of March,  in 2004, I came home from work to find this message on my answering machine, "Do you still want the dog? if so,call  me at -------. " I called and told them I would be right over to get her.

Once again I gave her a bath and picked the ticks off of her. We had to have her shaved to get rid of all the mats in her fur. She weighed  about 7 1/2 pounds and was 2 1/2 years old. We had much to overcome. She had never been potty trained, didn't trust men, and had absolutely no idea what to do with a toy.

We have had her for 15 months now. She weighs almost 10 pounds and has unlearned most of her nervous ways, although she is still scared of thunderstorms and cats. She is crate trained and has learned to trust hubby. She expects him to 'rough her up' each evening when he gets home. They play a game where she helps him take off his socks. It is really funny to watch this apple shaped man chasing her. The groomer says she doesn't hide anymore. But she still has major separation anxiety issues. She is a great traveler! She gets very excited whenever I put on my tennies shoes, or get out her harness and leash, cuz she loves to go.  I take her with me to run errands. She goes in when we shop at Lowe's. She has made 3 trips to West Texas with us. When I take her to my parent's house, she seems to understand that she is there to sit in Moma's lap. Her only downfall is she is a licker. Boy, does she love to nail you right on the mouth!  Doggie sugar   I could rattle on and on. If  I were only half as wonderful as she thinks I am! Let's just say I'm glad we found each other.

  • Your dog is so precious looking. And your daughter is georgeous. You went through a lot of heartache trying to get her and in the end the Lord blessed you with letting you get her. Seems she must have been really mistreated by the man she was living with. Not much better by the wife if they let her get tick infested and her hair all matted up. But I am sure she knows now how it feels to be loved by your family. She is really cute. Your daughter looks kind of attached to her. We used to raise Siberian Huskies to sell, and the puppies were always so cute that I never wanted to get rid of any of them. But our dog would have 7-9 at a time and I knew there was no way I could keep that many pups. Besides, we never had them longer than 8 weeks because people wanted to buy them so quickly. Then I had a Pekinese and I gave her to another famiy before moving here (and I cried) because I didn't want her to have to be cooped up in an apt. because she was able to go outside when she wanted to at the farm and was not used to being in the house all the time. She loved it outside so gave her to another family who had a farm and she would be able to run. Thanks for the comment on my site. Always love reading your site too. You write interesting things. Have a great day.

  • Wow what an awesome story!  Your dog is so cute!  So whose hosting the lunch? hehe

  • Great picture - kinda makes you want to hug both of them!  What is it about dogs?  I'm definitely a dog lover, not a cat lover.  I guess I want the kind of unconditional love a dog gives.  At the same time, they are like perpetual 3 year olds, always getting into something!  Thx for sharing the story.

  • We came across our yellow lab in a similar way. I'm getting misty here just thinking about him. His name is Hank and he is such a huge part of our family that my daddy laughs and calls him my daughter's brother. It amazes me at how human like and smart he is. I think he found me to help me, no matter how much I think I'm helping him!!!

  • Aweee what a precious story. You are such a kind person. I hate it when I see people mistreating animals. Grrrrrrr. I am so glad she found a great home with you! Love, Sharon

  • I love hearing the story of Muffin.  What a sweet dog!  I'm glad you were able to rescue her.

RYC:  I think you are right about little girls favoring their dad's side of the family...  I think Kairi resembles Scott so much more than me.  She has Scott's mom's eyes and possibly hair coloring (Scott's Mom has reddish hair and BLUE eyes!)  ....  Some people ask me if I mind that she looks like Scott... I say, "Of course not!  I just wanted a girl so badly, I don't care who she looks like!"  **My husband's family has almost ALL boys, so I prayed SO HARD for a girl!**

    Have a great day!

  • Well I personally can guarantee you are every bit as wonderful as she thinks you are and more.  Ah, another sucker for the big sad eyes of need.  I have bought more than a couple of horses that way.

Skinny and worn out, on their dredded way to the glue factory or dog food plant..........It's just not fair when people get animals and don't give them their all, for an animal will always return it three times over.

My little Wiener has some major seperation anxiety issues.........he bawls, everytime I leave.

It's wonderful to be loved like that.

Hugs and have a wonderful day, Steph

ps, horsey kisses are slobbery and wet, and usually come with a side of alfalfa or a touch of grain.  ah ha.

  • she's so cute. and has a great story. my in laws travel with their dog, which is a challenge when they come to visit...my cats don't think much of maggie. by the time they leave they're sort of playing together, but only half heartedly out of fun. but they miss her after she's gone! we used to travel with our first cat when he was a kitten, and it was pretty interesting. now that we have two, i don't feel as bad leaving them at home. and i have a great friend who LOVES to come over & play with them while we're gone, so it's not too bad...but i miss them!

  • Hi there, I was just by your site yesterday and almost left a comment. Thanks for your greeting. I also homeschool my daughter, she's a Junior in high school, so I only have one year left. ;-(  It's been a wonderful experience, and this year we doubled it by hosting an exchange student from Italy!

Great story on finding your puppy. We've had a welsh corgi for five years and I know how they become part of the family.

  • What a great story!  Your little lady is just precious!  I am so glad you were able to adopt Muffin, and I am sure she is in doggie heaven in your loving home.  She reminds me of my little guy, Gunnar.  He follows me every where and loves to go places with me.  He runs to the door as soon as he hears the car keys rattling.

Is that your daughter in the picture?  If it is, she could be your twin!  Hugs, Cissy

  • MUFFFFFFIIIINNNNNNN!

God does love and care about His creatures, doesn't He? What a good God we serve!

Mean people! Why do they get pets when they know darn well they don't need 'em or want 'em?

  • That has always been beyond me! If you don't intend to make a pet a part of the family, you have no business with one. They were meant to be enjoyed not endured. With pets as with children, you get out of them pretty much what you put into them, I think. You can't expect them to mind if you never teach them anything.

Case in point: We used to have some neighbors who always admired our dog, Buffie's good manners. They kept a pair of labs in a fence on the back of their property and always complained how dumb they were. They had each other to play with and were fed and watered, but had no real interaction with the family. Buffie lived indoors with us, and was only alone long enough for us to go to church or shopping for the majority of her life. I could walk her without a leash and she would not leave my side. (My mom often said her 'grandog' minded better than any grandkids she had.) You can read about her if you like by clicking the link for "Buffie, the Best Dog Ever!".
